GLORIETTE LOOKOUT TOWER

There are few places where the beautiful panorama of the Fertő Region can be admired. It is a mostly flat region. We can find mountains from the village of Hidegség to the Rust Hills where visitors may watch the view. In front of the Gloriette the Fertő Region opens up.

In French word “gloriette” means a “small garden house” and this element is usually found in French or English gardens and parks. The “small house” in Fertőboz, unlike the similar buildings of its age, was built on a high place and not in a castle park. Not only its location is outstanding but the people linked to its creation as well: Earl Ferenc Széchényi and Palatine József. The effects of the Napoléon wars were felt in Sopron, too. The Commander in Chief of the army, Palatine József, arrived in the town in October 1800, and he visited Kiscenk and Fertőboz several times accompanied by Earl Ferenc Széchényi. The earl had the gloriette built – based on the plans of József Ringer – on the Fertőboz Hills in 1802 to commemorate these visits.

The Széchényi family had strong ties to the Lake Fertő region and Fertőboz. István Széchényi once wrote this about the area: „Fertő, Fertő, indeed you are ugly, but I still love you very much.” The building was degraded by the middle of the 20 th century so Endre Széchenyi had it renovated in 1943. That is when the sign „Erexit Comes Franciscus Széchényi. Renov. Com. Andreas Széchényi 1943” was put on the main ledge.

The lookout tower and surroundings were renovated in the spring of 2020 thanks to the “Gems of the Fertő Region” project.
